4-Phenyl-1,8-naphthalimides: Brightness and Tuning Emission over Widely Visible Gamut in Different Aggregated States

A series of 4-phenyl-1,8-napthalimides were synthesized, for which the fluorescence emission color can be tuned in aqueous solution. The phenyl ring introduced into the 4-position of naphthalimide was used to elicit a bright emission of the dyes in aqueous solution. We have also achieved the modulation of emission colors from purple to far-red by incorporating the dyes with different nanoparticles.

A tetrasulphite-containing fluorescent chemodosimeter for Hg2+ with optimized selectivity towards Ag+

A fluorescent chemodosimeter (TPAII-2) for Hg2+ was designed with four sulphur atoms in its trigger based on a combination strategy of reaction-based and chelation-based sensors. Compared to its previous generation of deprotection-based chedmodosimeter (TPAII-1), TPAII-2 displayed optimizing selectivity and sensitivity in its aqueous solution (containing only 1% DMSO as cosolvent). Furthermore, the cell imaging experiment evidenced the potential application of TPAII-2 in complex real samples.

Fluorescence turn-on NapTp in CTAB micelles for efficient detecting ferric ions in aqueous system

Naphthalimide-based probe (NapTp) has poor solubility and remain essentially none missive in water. This paper describes a rapid and simple route to encapsulate the probe NapTp into the hydrophobic core of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles, while ensuring solubility of the NapTp-CTAB assembly in water. Due to the hydrophobic character of the micelles core, the NapTp becomes fluorescent in water as it behaves in organic solvents. Importantly, the NapTp-CTAB assembly displays distinct fluorescence “turn-on” for sensing Fe3+ ions in 100% aqueous system. The probe most clearly reveals 1:1 multiplexing characteristics for aqueous analytes with an excellent selectivity. The detection limit of NapTp-CTAB for Fe3+ ions is estimated to be of 8.05 × 10−7 M.

A thermoresponsive fluorescent rotor based on a hinged naphthalimide for a viscometer and a viscosity-related thermometer

A new fluorescent smart unit (BNAP) based on bisnaphthalimide was designed and synthesized, of which two naphthalimide segments were conjugated through a twisted single bond at the 4-site. With the dual naphthalimide planes, BNAP can act as a double-channel rotor, which can output the shorter emission in twisted state and the longer emission in planar state. Because of the restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) effect, BNAP showed strong emission character in high viscosity circumstance. The longer and moderated emission in aggregates is attributed to the synergetic effects of RIR and intramolecular planarization. As a molecular rotor with dramatic changes in both emission wavelength and intensity, BNAP could be developed for rapid detection of viscosity. The probe generates a logarithmic response to viscosity of glycerol/water system with different ratio. Furthermore, the probe exhibits high sensitivity to the viscosity-related temperature variations. This property is very important because temperature always change surrounding viscosity in many biological systems and mechanical systems.

Tetraphenylethene end-capped [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine with aggregation-induced emission and large two-photon absorption cross-sections

New two-photon absorption dyes (TPEPT1 and TPEPT2) were designed and synthesized. These materials show different 2PA properties and unique AIE effects, in which TPEPT1 with higher brightness was used to perform a cell-imaging proposal.

A new diketopyrrolopyrrole-based near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent biosensor for BSA detection and AIE-assisted bioimaging

A new near-infrared fluorophore (DPPAM) based on diketopyrrolopyrrole was developed as bioprobe and cell stain. This bioprobe is shown to be “turn-on” response for BSA with high sensitivity and NIR emission ranged from 600 to 850 nm. AIE-assisted bioimaging also exhibited the obvious NIR signals in some special region where the dye-aggregates attached.
